Emeralds

Guthrie’s sources all of our emeralds from a single mine in Colombia, these beautiful rich green gemstones are a stunning option, however do require some extra care.

Emeralds, while being a relatively hard gemstone have a natural grain, so can be prone to chipping or cracking. As such we take special consideration to the setting of these gemstones to give them added protection.

Sapphires

The finest sapphires are what is known as ceylonese. These gemstones are sourced from Sri Lanka, Guthrie’s works with a family owned and operated company to source the very best.

Sapphire’s come in a variety of colours, including blue, green, yellow, peach and purple. Sapphire’s also come in a variety of shades, with the most vivid colours being the rarest and subsequently the highest price per carat.

Durability Sapphire’s while a little softer than diamond are a very hard gemstone, this is important as the harder a gemstone is, the more scratch resistant it is.

Rubies

The finest rubies are mined in Mozambique, however are found in a variety of locations, including Myanmar, Brazil and others. We work with local suppliers in each country to source these beautiful gemstones.

Rubies come in a variety of shades, the more vivid a ruby is the more desirable they are. It is also important to note that the clarity of a ruby is quite important as some can have a frosted appearance.

Ruby and Sapphire are both from the gemstone family Corundum, meaning they have the same hardness and are a great long lasting stone.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is from the gemstone family of Beryl – this is the same family as emerald however aquamarines don’t have the same natural grain, meaning they are relatively hard wearing.

Most aquamarine is sourced from Brazil, however is found in a variety of countries. Most aquamarine commissions have the classic sea blue colouring however this gemstone is found in a range of shades.

Morganite

Another gemstone in the Beryl family, Morganite is a peach or pink stone found in Madagascar. Morganite gets its name from the investment banker JP Morgan – who funded the mine where these are found.

Similar to an Aquamarine, these gemstones are reasonably hard wearing so can be used in an everyday piece such as an engagement ring.

Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a fascinating gemstone, these are only found in one mine the size of a football field on the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.  

Tanzanites range in colour from vivid blue to a lilac purple with the more vivid colours being the rarest. 

Tanzanite’s are softer gemstones so are better suited to jewellery such as pendants, however if made into a ring, special care is required.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline comes in both green and deep pink with some, known as watermelon tourmalines, featuring both colours.

Due to be slightly less rare, Tourmalines are often found in very interesting cuts such as this pixelated cut.

Tourmaline is a similar hardness to Aquamarine and morganite meaning they are fairly hard wearing, and can be used in an everyday piece.

The world of precious gemstones is vast, with many thousands of gemstones with potential to be used in jewellery. Other popular gemstone examples include Peridot, Citrine, Opal and Alexandrite to name a few.
